"Departure of the Halifax Mail from Dukes Dock, Liverpool, in 1844".
The Halifax Mail was one of the first passenger steam ships plying a regular route to North America, and departed from The Dukes Dock. The Birkenhead shore and its windmills are in the distance across the Mersey.
